Energy Performance

Capricorn Blinds have a large selection of shading products which can help with insulation and solar heat control. Here you can find out more about the energy performance of different blind types. You will also understand how they can have a positive impact on your energy bills.

We recommend taking a look at our conservatory blind collection here for our collection of energy efficient materials. Our Cellular range uses an intelligent honeycomb shape fabric can help with heat control. It retains the heat during winter and blocks the heat during the summer months.

The darker the blind the better it is at stopping heat and light transmitting through them. Therefore, we recommend darker fabrics for areas in the home where you want good light and heat control.

For more information on our energy efficient shading products, please feel free to come down to our showroom! We will happily explain how our shading solutions can help you stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. (and save on your Energy bills!) If you are looking for a great energy efficient blind then be sure to check out our Duette® Blind collection.

There is something called ‘U-Value’ which refers to a measure of the heat transmission. It can be through a building part (such as a wall or window) or a given thickness of a material (such as insulation). The lower the number the better. The most common type of window in houses in the UK are double glazed, which generally have a U-Value of 2.9. With just a pair of energy efficient blinds, you can bring this number down to a whopping 2.1. You’ll save 30% of your energy!

Wooden shutters can do even better by bringing your U-Value down to 1.9. These numbers do depend on the glazing and size of the window, and the material used for the blind. Therefore, it is a great option to keep your house energy efficient. Overall investing in a high-quality pair of blinds or a good wooden shutter will end up benefiting you.

It’s a scientific fact that heat is attracted to cold. For example, in winter months, indoor heating moves toward and escapes through windows to the outdoors. Meanwhile in summertime, the outside heat flows into your home through the same windows. At Capricorn we have many different blind types and fabrics that boast high U-values. As a result, they help reduce energy consumption, save on heating and cooling costs, and create a more comfortable room setting.

Let’s recap on some of the major points made in this article:

  • U-Value refers to a measure of heat transmission through a building part or a given thickness of a material.
  • Both Blinds and Shutters can help to bring down the U-Value
  • The darker the blind the better it is at stopping heat and light transmitting through them
  • Here at Capricorn, we design many of our products to reduce the amount of solar heat that passes through the window, known as the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)
  • The lower the SHGC, the more protected your home is from the sun’s heat.

We can use the latest software within the industry to give you indicative energy saving values for your specific windows and blinds. For more information, please ask in store or feel free to give us a call on 0121 772 5366
